Tumblr is a widely used and user-friendly blogging platform that has proven to be a useful tool for various purposes. According to users, it is an effective platform for sharing updates, articles, and visual content with a wide audience. Retail businesses have found Tumblr to be particularly beneficial for showcasing new merchandise and attracting younger customers. By leveraging different effects on Tumblr, businesses can enhance the presentation of their products in a more appealing way. To ensure initial photographs are visually compelling, having someone with a photography or design background can be helpful. Regardless of the business size, creating a Tumblr account can open up an avenue to bring in new clientele.

For businesses using Tumblr, it's crucial to strike a balance with photo effects in order to present an accurate and flattering portrayal of merchandise. Making existing customers aware of the business's Tumblr account encourages them to follow and share it, potentially bringing in new business. Beyond businesses, Tumblr serves as a useful tool for groups aiming to align everyone on a common ground regarding current issues. The support of blogs and samples/examples of various product categories on Tumblr is especially beneficial for individuals who think visually. Furthermore, Tumblr is commonly used by content marketing teams, online personalities, PR agencies, and communication companies to easily share short-form and visual content with their respective target audiences. Overall, Tumblr's simplicity, creative atmosphere, and flexibility make it an attractive choice for individuals and organizations looking to engage with others through visual expression and storytelling.

Based on user reviews, here are the key recommendations for using Tumblr:

  1. Give Tumblr a try as it is worth exploring for basic image posting needs and as a simple place to post photos or journal entries. It offers an easy way to quickly get started and is cost-effective, especially for personal and small business use.

  2. Be mindful of the potentially weird content on Tumblr. While it offers diverse content, not everything may be to everyone's liking or appropriate. It is important to keep an open mind and be aware of this aspect before using the platform.

  3. Start an account on Tumblr to build a presence and spread the word about its features and uses. Users recommend having a general idea of what you want to do with Tumblr and finding easy-to-choose layouts and designs. However, if additional functionality like email sign-ups for coupons is required, considering alternative platforms such as WordPress might be necessary.

Overall, users appreciate Tumblr for its simplicity in meeting basic image posting needs but also acknowledge its limitations in terms of functionality and suitability for enterprise use.

We have been using Tumblr as a means for staff to share short stories, tips, and other content with each other. The focus of this content sharing practice has been an attempt to enhance engagement, but giving employees a way to share their thoughts, stories, and anything that might be going on as a means to get other employees involved in conversation. Whether it's best practices, or simply sharing a fun/engaging story to get a dialogue going, we encourage people to share and keep a conversation going.
  • Simple microblogging platform that is easy to use.
  • Easy to follow and share your own content.
  • Wide variety of content for users to link to and respond to.
  • Better filters to limit offensive or not safe for work content.
  • More options for responding to posts.
  • More robust privacy options to cater to a wider variety of users and needs.
Tumblr can be complicated when it comes to using it in a work setting. With the privacy options being somewhat limited, you will want to make sure that your staff are only sharing information that they are comfortable with in the public realm. You'll need to put some effort into designing an appropriate policy that covers the use of Tumblr and what content can be shared.

If you're simply finding a way to engage staff and perhaps show outsiders what it is like to work at your organization, it can be used quite effectively, but you have to be mindful of how involved it gets.
  • Positive: Increased engagement with staff.
  • Positive: Stronger feeling of community and additional areas for dialogue in a less business-like setting.
  • Negative: Additional privacy and policy considerations that may not be necessary for other platforms.
Above all else, the fact that Tumblr is free helps. However, I would only use it as a supplementary tool and not the sole tool. We have ultimately settled on MS Teams as the overall platform with potential Tumblr use up in the air in the future. If you're thinking of finding a platform to generate easy discussion and perhaps show others what it's like at your organization, it's worth giving Tumblr a shot. Ultimately, though, Tumblr is not well suited as a full scale communication platform (not that it's trying to be that, anyway).

Since Tumblr is capable of supporting so many functions, it's a useful tool within a group of people to ensure that we are all "on the same page" regarding issues at hand. The support of blogs and samples/examples of product categories is a great feature for people who think visually.
  • The ability to follow blogs that deal with very specific topics and POV is very useful, as they are generally well written and highly on point.
  • Being able to use a visual example within a "digital community" to say "is this what you mean?" is priceless.
  • When a team is "word smithing" something, such as a mission statement, using examples from Tumblr is very effective.
  • The search function could be more robust and detailed.
  • I personally like the randomized visual layout of examples, but some team members found it to be annoying.
  • The "recommended for you" feature rarely makes a lot of sense to me...
Preparing for a creative meeting makes Tumblr a very helpful tool to ensure that participants are ready to work on the same task. Being able to contribute in advance saves folks a lot of time agreeing on "look and feel" issues, and allows greater productivity with in a team of like-minded professionals.
  • Saves time and effort by not wasting efforts on untenable issues.
  • Helps creative thinkers get to the point rapidly.
  • Brings multiple approaches/ideas to the virtual table.
Tumblr is more specific.

At my ad agency, we use Tumblr as a vehicle for writing about media and technology in-the-moment. We encourage the younger members of our staff to create posts about anything they see fit-- innovative new technology (i.e. shoppable billboards), cool activations being executed by our clients, or truly any other advertising or media news that interests them. It's being used across our organization, and the hope is that Tumblr will help continue to build our credibility as an expert in our field.
  • Visually appealing: given that Tumblr is primarily a photo blog - although it has grown into so much more than that - there is an element of attractiveness and consistency to Tumblr. There are templates that you can use when creating your posts, like any user-friendly web tool, and I feel these are helpful in keeping that clean visual consistency.
  • Flexible: it may seem like a small thing, but Tumblr allows you to easily schedule or queue your blogs for future posting. You are able to schedule these posts in such an intuitive way (by typing, for example, "tomorrow, 9 AM" instead of "Thursday, 3/20, at 9:00 AM"), and ensure that your writing is being disseminated in exactly the way you choose.
  • At times, using Tumblr to post various media can feel a bit clumsy. There are some kinks that could be worked out in terms of how pictures are uploaded or copied over from another website, but I don't feel that this ever hinders my use of the tool.
I think Tumblr is the perfect fit for a company or agency that deals in the visual arts or sciences. For advertising, in particular, Tumblr can be useful in helping an agency stake a claim and showcase the work they've done for their client-- which is not always demonstrated in other ways. Tumblr is also incredibly easy to use on-the-go, and is perfect for use in a fast-paced industry.
  • Since Tumblr is a free tool to use, the impact it's had on our business objectives has only been positive. We do use Tumblr as a way to hopefully build credibility for our company (within the ad world), in addition to building agency/brand love among future potential employees.
Because of its ease of use - both on desktop and mobile - and the perks of being able to schedule a post for future release, Tumblr is a tool that we plan to continue using in the long term. Despite feeling like a primairly one-sided tool, it can also start conversations online, which is something for which we are always striving.

I use Tumblr for several of my clients. It is great for clients who want to share short form and visual content (like lifestyle, fashion and design industry clients). It's usually used by one or more people on the content marketing team of an organization. I also have several online personality clients who use the platform.
  • Tumblr integrates with other platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. This helps increase the reach of a piece of content.
  • Tumblr is easy to set up and use.
  • Tumblr is easily customizable.
  • Tumblr has a great mobile app for on-the-go publishing.
  • Tumblr has several free themes that suit many different types of publishing needs.
  • Tumblr doesn't pull the image thumbnail directly from a link, so the user has to manually input an image link as well when publishing a link post.
  • Some of Tumblr's themes have functionality issues (for instance, the tweets widget may not always work in some themes).
  • Tumblr does not support ads.
I would say it depends on the business and marketing objectives my colleague has. If my colleague works with lots of themed, visual or short form content, I would recommend a Tumblr blog. If my colleague works with long form, or highly theoretical content, I would not recommend a Tumblr blog.
  • Increased traffic to websites
  • Increased reach for marketing content
  • Increased brand recognition
Again, it depends on the marketing objectives and content the user wants to publish. Blogger is a great platform, as is WordPress, but they are more suited for longer form content. They also facilitate discussion better than Tumblr. I don't use Tumblr instead of everything else, I use Tumblr along with everything else. It's one of many tools in a content marketing toolbox.
I have not had any technical issues with Tumblr that I couldn't solve quickly on my own. It's easy to use and integrates with other networks I use personally and for my clients. The platform has been stable over 6+ years and has an active, engaged user base. I see no reason to leave Tumblr.
